Bell Countians Learn 'Computer ABCs' Thanks to JobSight Workshop

A “full house” of people eager to learn the basics of computer use took part in each of the inaugural sessions of the JobSight workforce network’s “Computer ABCs” workshop in Middlesboro and Pineville.

“We’re extremely pleased with the turnout, and glad that Bell County residents decided to take advantage of this opportunity,” Jennifer Thacker, manager of the JobSight one-stop network, said. Thacker and Janie Hackney, JobSight one-stop coordinator, were on hand to help participants as they received an introduction to basic computer terms, equipment, and operations.

The free three-hour workshops were held simultaneously at the Bell County JobSight at Bell-Whitley C.A.A. in Pineville and the Middlesboro Campus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College on June 29 and 30. The workshops were led by instructors Molly Jones and Charlotte Garland at the JobSight and Patty Burnside, Marcia Hembree, Millard Robbins, Virginia Strouth, and Misty Lindsey at the community college.

Topics covered by the Computer ABCs workshop included: purchasing, installing, and maintaining a computer; basic computer operations; system software vs. application software; how to store information; printers and printing; using the internet; security, computer viruses and “spam”; e-mail; and buying and selling on-line.

Thacker said the workshop helps absolute beginners who sometimes have never touched a computer before learn how to buy, set up, and operate one.

“Everything from banking and shopping to correspondence can be done with a computer now,” Thacker said. “With more and more activities going strictly on-line every day, it’s important for people to be comfortable using computers, and Computer ABCs helps them reach that point.

“JobSight is glad to provide that opportunity through its partnership with Bell-Whitley C.A.A., Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, and Kentucky Adult Education,” Thacker added.

The JobSight network is administered by the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP). In addition to the Bell County JobSight, EKCEP operates JobSight full service workforce centers in Clay, Perry and Pike counties and nearly 70 affiliate sites and access points which make JobSight services available throughout 23 counties in eastern Kentucky. JobSight provides access to over a dozen state and federal employment and training programs and services for job seekers and employers.
