U.S. Dept. of Labor, University of Kentucky Web Sites Feature April Perkins' Success Story
[August 2006] The story of how Morgan County R.N. April Perkins overcame her daughter's cancer and financial struggles to complete her nursing studies and start a medical career is now featured on national and statewide on-line news outlets. April's story appears on the website of the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration among "State and Local Workforce Activities" from across the nation. The story also appears on the University of Kentucky's on-line news page. Click the blue links above to view those versions of April's story. April was first featured in a "Success Story" by the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, Inc. (EKCEP), which administers Workforce Investment Act (WIA) funds and programs throughout 23 eastern Kentucky counties. After her daughter's leukemia went into remission in 2005, April resumed her nursing studies with the financial support of the WIA, which covered gas and food expenses related to her college experience. April began her registered nursing career at the University of Kentucky's
Markey Cancer Center, and she will soon continue that career at the
St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, KY, where she did
her clinical rotations during college. Sidney
Castle, April's WIA career adviser at the Gateway
Community Service Organization, explained that working at St.
Claire will dramatically shorten April's work-related commute and
allow her much more time with her family.
